Pelvic floor and erection: the connection
The pelvic floor is a muscle group that most men know little about, but that is essential for a good erection. A weak or tense pelvic floor can cause or worsen erectile problems.
Why the pelvic floor matters
An erection is not just a matter of blood vessels. The blood also needs to be retained. That is the task of the pelvic floor muscles, particularly the ischiocavernosus and bulbospongiosus muscles. These muscles clamp the venous drainage shut so blood stays in the corpora cavernosa.
In men with a weak pelvic floor, blood leaks away too quickly. The erection may start but does not hold. This is also called venous leak and is a common but underdiagnosed cause of erectile problems.
Additionally, an overly tense pelvic floor can cause problems. Chronic muscle tension in the pelvis restricts blood flow, causes pain and can disrupt erectile function.
Three roles of the pelvic floor in erection
The pelvic floor fulfils three functions that directly affect the quality of your erection.
Blood retention
The muscles clamp the venous drainage shut. Without this compression, blood flows back too quickly and the erection loses firmness.
Rigidity
The final phase of an erection, from firm to fully hard, is actively driven by the pelvic floor muscles. A weak pelvic floor produces a half-hard erection.
Ejaculation
The pelvic floor muscles are responsible for the rhythmic contractions during ejaculation. Weakness can lead to reduced intensity or control.
Signs of a pelvic floor problem
A pelvic floor problem does not only manifest in erectile complaints. Watch for the following signs.
- Erection that fadesThe erection starts but fades before or during intercourse. Typical of venous leak due to insufficient muscle compression.
- Post-void dribblingUrine loss after urination indicates reduced muscle strength in the pelvic floor. Often the first sign.
- Pelvic painChronic pain or pressure in the perineum, lower abdomen or groin. May indicate muscle tension (hypertonic pelvic floor).
- Reduced ejaculation forceEjaculation feels less powerful. The contractions are weaker. This is directly related to the condition of the pelvic floor muscles.
What can be done about it?
At Revivo, we treat pelvic floor problems with two specialized techniques that complement each other.
Electromagnetic chair (3 Tesla)
You sit fully clothed on a chair that generates powerful electromagnetic pulses. These pulses automatically activate the pelvic floor muscles: up to 25,000 contractions in 25 minutes. Much more effective than exercising on your own.
Vacuum pump therapy
A medical vacuum pump draws blood to the erectile tissue and trains the vascular mechanism. With regular use, blood flow improves and the tissue is trained in retaining blood.
